The oldest building in Moscow

The oldest building in Moscow

It is still not clear what is the oldest construction on the territory of Moscow. Most houses in old days were made of wood since it was the most wide-spread material though not durable enough to sustain Russian climate.

Thus religious edifice, the Savior Cathedral of the Andronikov Monastary seems the ancient one in Moscow. It was built between 1425 and 1427 to replace the wooden church on its place. Its interior was decorated with Andrey Rublev and Daniil Chernuy's frescoes which have not been preserved, only fragments of floral ornament. In the middle of the 19th century the cathedral was partially rebuilt after the fire. In the middle of the 20th century it was reconstructed according to its original design.

Thus we can hardly say it is the oldest building in Moscow since it has been touched since 1427. In this regard, the Assumption Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin can compete to be called the oldest. It was constructed in 1475–1479 by the Italian architect Aristotel Fioravanti. It became the major cathedral in Moscow since all the coronations of Russian monarchs took place here.

Everyone can enjoy the exterior and interior of this cathedral during the Moscow tour.
