Mark Chagall. The origins of the master’s creative language

15.06.2012 – 30.09.2012
The State Tretyakov Gallery presents the exhibition dedicated to the 125th anniversary of Marc Chagall.  Most of the artworks weren't seen by the Russian public before.

The exhibition features little known  legacy of the master, from the earliest sketches of Vitebsk to  his Paris collages and prints.

Chagall was always inspired by the beauty of everyday life. "It is not true, that my art is fantastic. I'm realist and I love normal life on the Earth!"  - the artist used to say. The painting by Chagall  will bring you to the world of Russian-Hewish provincial town with its violinists, weddings, butchers, horse drivers and barbers.  The boys and lovers are flying in the heaven and the simplest everyday things become almost magical in their beauty.

A large part of the exhibition is the collection of the artist's family. This series is like an illustrative autobiography of the artist. You'll see self-portraits, portraits of  his wife Bella and  daughter Ida, images of grandmothers, cousins, sisters, performed in the late 1900s - the 1910s.

The exhibition features Chagall illustrations to the Bible, 'Dead Souls' by Gogol and La Fontaine "Fables". Overall you'll see more than 150 graphic works and paintings by the artist, sculptures, works of applied art from the collection of foreign and Russian museums and private collections.

If you're planning to visit Tretyakov Galery during your Moscow tours don't miss the opportunity  to see the  Chagall exhibition in the Engineering Wing of the gallery.
