Mom, I would like to have such a dress! - can be heard now and then at the exhibition.

Bring your kids (mainly young ladies!) and feel the ambiance of court receptions, masquerades, balls as well as see everyday life of Russian Imperial family. This atmosphere is created by a great collection of portraits, ball and evening dresses, collection of boots and home dresses, intricately designed fans etc. WOW effect is guaranteed!

Join this tour guided by the State Historical Museum expert if you would like:
  • to hear what fashion houses and couturiers dressed two last Russian Empresses
  • to see how big Aleksander III used to be and see what uniform and costumes he used to wear
  • to see a beautiful collection of shoes and boots which belonged to Maria Fedorovna (Wife of Aleksandr II and mother of Nikolas II) and get amazed at the size of her shoe!
  • to learn about ball regulations which were supposed to follow those who were invited as well as unspoken rules (For example, married women were allowed to wear diamonds and diadems while unmarried ladies were supposed to were white dresses with ribbons and flowers. Remember the first ball of Natasha Rostova in War and Peace!)
The exhibition showcases a huge collection of outfits made by the best fashion houses and couturiers of that time. The favorite Couturier of Maria Fedorovna, for example was Charles Worth, who only visited the wife of Napoleon II and the Empress of France Eugenie. An excetion was made for Maria Fedorovna. Drawings and samples of fabrics were sent to St. Petersburg from Paris and then dresses were sewn in accordance with the mannequin made to fit the Russian Empress.
