Aren’t you curious to see how the Russian Orthodox icons are painted? We’ll visit an icon-painting studio, learn how the Orthodox icons are made, practice making paint out of natural ingredients and even try painting an angel in Russian Orthodox technique.

We see icons so often while in Russia and yet we often get the feeling that the message, mystical meaning of this sacred art is hidden. Why did Orthodox art always remain so conservative compared to Western paintings? Why do figures of saints never cast shadows? What is the significance of every color and what color can never be found in icon painting? An icon is always more than an illustration. In Russian we say that we “write” instead of “paint” icons. During the tour we’ll talk to an icon-painter Natalia and learn more about the language and hidden meaning of major motifs of icons.

While in artist studio we’ll be able to see natural paints used in icon paintings and even practice making the paint. Would you like to try painting an angel in Russian Orthodox tradition? Today we’ll learn how to do it!

Close to the artist’s studio is a charming wooden church. We’ll have a chance to go inside during the service and also discover some icons painted by the artist Natalia.

During the workshop we'll have a tea accompanied by some sweets.

Tour itinerary
10.15 am Meeting with a guide on Sokolniki metro station in the center of the platform
Walking (about 20 min) through Sokolniki park
We'll have a quick visit to the church to listen to the service
11 am Icon painting studio visit
12 pm - 12.30 We'll have tea and have a chance to talk to the icon painter and ask her all your questions
12.30 pm - 1pm Walking back to the metro
