Wind of changes: Russian Revolution 1917

join!

02.12.2018
The tour is focused on the events that happened 100 years ago and after. We’ll talk about the Russian Revolution and the changes it brought to lives of ordinary people.

Did you know why the Bolsheviks, a tiny weak party even at the beginning of 1917, came to rule Russia in just a few months?  Why Lenin moved to Moscow very soon after Bolsheviks took power in Petrograd? The tour starts from the area of the Revolution Square. In 1918, Moscow regained its capital status. The Bolsheviks brought with them new rituals, monuments, holidays. We will look at the Bolshoi Theater, the Maly Theater, the Metropol Hotel, the Union House, the Revolution Square and try to imagine what the city center could look like in the first years of Bolshevik rule.

During the tour we’ll talk about Soviet Utopia and the tragic reality, discuss the methods Bolsheviks used to maintain power and the purges of 1930s. Did you know how the famous inner prison of Lubyanka functioned? Where was the notorious "Shooting House" in Moscow?

The highlight of the tour is the visit inside the House on the Embankment as it gives us the opportunity to learn Soviet history through the eyes of people who lived at the time. The apartment house was built in the early 1930s as the government building, among the residents of the house were Bolshevik party members, heroes of the Soviet Union, political and military leaders. We’ll visit a typical apartment of the Soviet elite and talk about the luxuries the house could boast of. But was the life of the Soviet elite really happy?
