Melikhovo, the estate of Chekhov

Discover Chekhov's Melikhovo estate outside Moscow, admire its peaceful gardens, and learn more about one of the greatest Russian writers.

In the seven years that Chekhov spent in Melikhovo, Chekhov wrote 42 works, including "Uncle Vanya," "The Seagull," and numerous short stories. If you love literature Melikhovo is an insightful destination to include in your tour of Moscow.

9.30 am Meet your guide and driver at the Moscow hotel. It'll take you about 1,5 hours to reach the estate
11 am – 1 pm The tour of the Melikhovo estate will feature
A leisurely walk through the old park, which looks peaceful all season. The place looks fantastic in May when all the cherry trees are in blossom. In the depths of the garden, we'll take a look at a cozy little cottage, where in 1895 Anton Chekhov wrote his famous play The Seagull.

A visit inside the old manor house of the writer. We'll see how the house looked when Chekhov lived and worked there.

During the tour, we'll see the medical reception room where Chekhov provided free medical care to local peasants. Chekhov practiced as a doctor throughout most of his literary career: "Medicine is my lawful wife", he once said, "and literature is my mistress."

Optional Tour extension:

  • Visit a rural school established by Chekhov in the 1890s. It functioned as a school till the 1970s but was converted into a museum later. You can see the restored classroom and the teacher's apartment and learn about the late 19th century's primary rural education.
  • If you come to the estate on Saturday, you might be lucky to witness a theatrical performance. The theatre season lasts from late May till late September. The repertoire is based on Chekhov works, as well as the works by other writers. The performances are in Russian, but your interpreter will help you understand the plot, and the show will surely add to your experience.
  • After the tour of the museum, we can take you to a picturesque monastery Davidova pustynj (about 10 min by car).  Not far from here is a holy-water spring Talezh where you can take a cold bath and raise your spirit.

When to go

The Chekhov’s Melihovo estate is open daily from 10 am till 5 pm, The day off is Monday.

The estate is beautiful all year round but it will be more atmospheric in the warm season when you can walk around the blossoming garden.  On Saturdays, in summer you can witness a local theater performance.
