Torzhok is an atmospheric old town in the Tver region, which offers visitors the chance to step off the beaten track and experience a whole new world of culinary, historical, cultural, and scenic delights. The town is not much known by foreign visitors, and it does not look as polished and neat as Suzdal, but it will charm you with its authentic rural beauty.

How to get

Torzhok is located on the way from Moscow to Saint Petersburg. You can include this trip between your Moscow tours and St Petersburg tours. If you plan to take a Sapsan train from one city to another, you might have a stop in Tver and then spend one or two days in Torzhok.

A trip to Torzhok might be combined with a trip to Novgorod Velikiy. You may also stop in Torzhok on the way to Lake Seliger, located approximately 200 kilometers from Torzhok. The lake is an ideal escape from the hectic city, offering excellent opportunities to relax in nature.

There're no direct trains from Moscow or Saint Petersburg to Torzhok, but you can find many convenient trains to Tver. The journey from Moscow lasts 1 hour if you travel by Sapsan or 1 hour 40 min if you choose the lastochka train. Thus, you may take a morning lastochka train, leave Moscow at 06.58 am, and arrive at Tver at 8.44 am.

Torzhok is around 60 km from Tver. You can either get to Torzhok by taxi or take another train from Tver to Torzhok. This trip lasts about 1 hour.

One- or two-day trip to Torzhok

Day One

Upon arrival, we'll have a chance to walk around this picturesque old town, explore its well-preserved city center, and climb the city rampart of the 12th century.

The tour features a visit to The Tikhvin Church, a hidden gem of wooden architecture, the Borisoglebsk Monastery, and several stops to enjoy picturesque panoramic views of the city.

1 pm Lunch break. You'll have a chance to try Pozharsky cutlets which is a popular Torzhok delicacy.
Upon request, we may arrange a cooking master class in one of the city's restaurants.

2 pm – 4 pm Visit the legendary Torzhok gold embroiderers center, admire the most exquisite collection of the museum, and make a memorable gift.

Torzhok was famous for this craft back in the 12th century, and this art is still living today. Craftswomen still embroider state emblems and Russian general's shoulder straps, picturesque ornaments, and faces of saints. The tour gives you a chance to join an inspirational workshop.

Day Two

10 am Pottery House with a master-class
Practice pottery while visiting the Potter's House. You'll learn about this ancient local craft and hear the local legends. It is a lot of fun to work with the material!

11.30 Enjoy an outstanding view of the city from the top of St Ilija church. It's time to say good buy to the peaceful town of Torzhok.

View on the Tvertsa River

If you travel with kids, we'd recommend you visiting Novotorzhsky Kremlin. The wooden complex is a reconstruction, but the tour will give you a chance to see an exciting exhibition of armor and weapons. You may visit a historical shooting range and practice bow shooting, learn how to throw spears, take a selfie with historical armaments and in armor.

In the afternoon, we will visit the Italian cheese farm Pietro Mazza in the Torzhok region. Here you can try several types of fresh and aged cheese, including the famous mozzarella, sweet ricotta, burrata, butyrro with a delicate butter filling and more. Enjoy a traditional Italian lunch.
We may arrange a cheese-making master class; however, the whole process takes a few hours.

While visiting the farm, you may take a walk to the stable accompanied by a guide and even practice horse-riding.

A convenient Lastochka train leaves Tver at 6.07 pm and arrives in Moscow at 7.47 pm
