Monument to Minin and Pozharsky on Red Square.

Red Square hasn't changed much for the last 100 years. To the left we see the Kremlin, an old citadel and the former residence of Russian tsars. In the 19th century the towers were painted white and crowned with double-headed eagles. After the Revolution red color got a special significance, the Kremlin was painted red and Soviet stars were installed on top of the towers. This is how the Kremlin looks up to now. An elegant red building in the center is the History museum. It was constructed in neo-Russian style by the architect Sherwood in 1894. The unique museum survived up to now, its collection traces the development of Russia and its people from ancient times to late 19th century. To the right of the museum we see the Resurrection gates. It was a ceremonial entrance to Red Square. The original gates were demolished in the Soviet times (tanks participating in Red Square parades couldn't get through the gates). The new gates were constructed in 1995; this replica looks similar to the original. In the 19th century The monument to Minin and Pozharsky stood in the center of Red Square. The prince Dmitry Pozharsky and the merchant Kuzma Minin were the heroes of the 17th century war. They gathered the all-Russian volunteer army and expelled the Poles from the Moscow Kremlin. The monument was erected in 1818 soon after the victory over Napoleon, symbolizing the rise in patriotic consciousness. Minin was symbolically indicating with his hand that the enemy was inside the Kremlin. Up to 1936 the statue remained on its original place , but after the Revolution it was a an obstacle during parades. The authorities discussed plans for its demolition or moving to some indoor museum. In the end the statue was moved closer to St. Basil's cathedral where it remains up to the present. |
