The word mammoth is of Russian origin. Most probably it comes from the Yakut language. It sounded mamont and meant "the earth". It is in Yakutia were the first remains of the mammoth were found. The mammoth bones were found burrowed in the ground, that's why "the earth" could give the animal its name. There are other theories concerning the origin of this word.
