Moscow winters The coldest temperature ever recorded in Moscow was −42.2 °C. It happened in January 1940.
But usually it feels much warmer in winter. The coldest month in Moscow region is January, the average temperature at this time of year is -7,5 °C. We usually have one-two weeks of really cold weather when it's below – 20 °C, but the rest of the time is pretty mild. The first snow usually falls in October-November and it stays until April.  Muscovites are used to their climate and they spend a lot of time outdoors. An exotic winter pastime is ice swimming. People do it for health benefits and as a ritual of the Orthodox Church for the feast of the Baptism of Our Lord ( January 19). Ice swimmers are called 'walruses' in Russia.
